About this discussion paper
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) such as ChatGPT, as well as educational technology (EdTech) powered by GenAI, have the potential to improve learning outcomes for all students. However, teachers, school leaders and education policymakers are grappling with questions about how to navigate the potential benefits and risks of using this technology in learning and teaching. This includes: How can we harness GenAI to improve learning outcomes while ensuring safe, ethical and responsible use?
As part of its 2024 Research Agenda, the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) is undertaking research to help schools and systems make more informed decisions about using GenAI tools to reverse growing inequity in student learning outcomes. This discussion paper identifies key concerns and explores potential research opportunities to better understand this issue.
